Event Details

3e United is excited to bring Union: A New Musical, an innovative new theater performance portraying the struggles of the 1968 Memphis sanitation workers strike. The strike played a defining role in civil rights history bringing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis, to begin his next great work – the Poor People’s Campaign. For Dr. King, the strike represented the convergence of previously disparate themes of justice, dignity, collaboration and love coming into union for a greater national movement. These themes are as relevant in today’s culture which is why each performance is followed by a time of audience engagement, a “talk back” to discuss the impact of its message.

Created in the contemporary style of Hamilton, blending soul and hip hop with history, Union was written and produced by an acclaimed group of artists, performers and civil rights scholars including Anasa Troutman, Gregory Thompson and Sho Baraka. The first full-scale performance of Union will take place in Winston-Salem on February 7, 2019. The play is already getting some attention from Broadway producers.

Tickets are $25 each
